THE RaiLNG PROJECT

The RaiLNG project studies the feasibility from a technical, economic and environmental point of view to establish the LNG infrastructure as a new source of energy in railway traction.
The consortium formed by Renfe, Enagas, Naturgy and Bureau Veritas has been selected by INEA to take charge of the project thanks to its itinerant refueling infrastructure proposal, which allows it to be transferred to other non-electrified railway corridors.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1
Project Management and Communication

It includes the general coordination of all project activities, as well as communication and dissemination tasks.

ACTIVITY 2

Preparation of the testing infrastructure
It consists of the preparation of vehicles and refueling infrastructure to carry out the tests of activity 3. It also includes the initial regulatory study, the training of personnel and the granting of authorizations and permits necessary to carry out the pilot test.

ACTIVITY 3

Pilot test
Real tests are carried out over a minimum of 15,000 km to extract technical, environmental, logistical and economic data. This information will be the basis for developing activities 4 and 5.

ACTIVITY 4

Studies
Oriented to facilitate the deployment of the LNG infrastructure in the railway sector in Spain and the EU. Data from the pilot test will be evaluated to carry out logistic, environmental, technical, economic and legal studies, as well as a life cycle analysis (LCA).

ACTIVITY 5

Program for the introduction of rail transport with LNG in the TEN-T network
The technical, economic and environmental feasibility of the deployment of LNG in Spain and other EU states is evaluated as an alternative fuel in the railroad at other scales and different locations in the TEN-T network.
